Chapter Seven: The Faultline
Kain was in high spirits for the rest of that day. He'd considered hanging around while Silvia slept, but couldn't decide if that was caring or creepy, so he'd opted to leave.
Comman hadn't told him how long he was supposed to be kicked out for, after all, and his place was at the Prince's side.
When he let himself back into the room, Comman was alone, sitting on the bed with his hands braced against the too soft mattress, eyes closed. There were lines furrowed into his face from where he was thinking too hard, and Kain frowned in response.
"What's happened?"
Comman opened his eyes slowly and let out a sigh. "Someone was attacked by more of those things," he said.
Kain swore. "A human?"
"No." The Prince shook his head. "One of the dignitaries here for the meeting. It happened right after we'd broken for midday, so the rest of the talks were cancelled. They're saying..."
"What?"
"They're saying they think one of us brought the creatures with us."
Kain frowned. That was a serious accusation. "Why would they think that?" he asked. "These are peace talks. It would be counterproductive to peace to do something like that, wouldn't it?"
Comman smiled, but Kain could see the weariness in it. "It would," he said, getting to his feet with a sigh. "Unfortunately, it's hard to be sure of everyone's motivations. Our people have lived in peace for a time, but it wasn't always that way. My mother was a warrior queen for a reason."
"Because it wasn't safe."
The Prince nodded, stepping towards the window. "Exactly. Back then, people wanted to know where our power came from. They wanted to find the source of it and take it for themselves. That was always the way of it."
"No one ever did, though."
"Of course they didn't. Even we don't know the font from which the power flows. It could be something on or in the planet or something on or in our blood." The Prince's lips twisted in a wry smile. "I like to think it's the latter. That it's one of those things that skips some people and not others. Like eye or hair color. Or having large feet. If the planet is choosing who to give these powers to..."
Kain understood his point. He stepped forward and clapped a hand to the Prince's shoulder. "You're worthy, Your Highness," he said.
"Am I?" Comman asked, still gazing out of the window. "Sometimes I wonder. I brought us here because I thought it was the right thing to do. I thought it was the best thing for us. But perhaps we should have stayed where we were. I just...I thought if we shared the power around, if we used it to help those who were different from us, then they would want it less. Then we wouldn't have to go back to those days before when even my mother was frightened of what was to come."
"It's a noble dream," Kain said.
"But perhaps just a dream. Perhaps I should learn to accept the way things are.
